PEER SUPPORT + PRIVACY IN NEW YORK

Ask what protection applies before you begin.

Since March 18, 2026, New York law protects qualifying communications in a formally established law-enforcement peer-support program with a trained, agency-designated peer specialist. That protection does not automatically cover every informal conversation between officers.

  • Ask whether this is the agency’s formal peer-support program and whether the peer is designated and trained.
  • Ask about exceptions, including safety concerns, threats, criminal conduct, mandatory reports, court orders and disclosure you authorize.
  • Outside clinicians and hotlines follow their own privacy, reporting and record rules.

CHOOSING A THERAPIST

Six questions can help you find the right fit.

  • How much experience do you have with law enforcement or first responders?
  • How do you handle job-related and firearms-related concerns?
  • What is confidential, what creates a record and what are the exceptions?
  • Which trauma approaches do you use?
  • Can you include a partner or family member when useful?
  • What happens if I need help between appointments?
