911You're here. Take the next step with another person.
If you're thinking about suicide, worried you may act, or concerned about someone else, help is available right now.
You do not have to be certain this is a crisis to contact 988.
Help for this moment.
Help me stay safe right now
Call or text 988 first. If you can do so safely, move near another person and create time and distance from anything you could use to hurt yourself.
If a firearm is nearby, do not handle it. Move to another room or safe place. Ask a trusted, legally authorized person to secure it temporarily according to applicable law and department policy. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911.
“I'm having a hard time and I don't feel safe alone. Can you call me or stay with me right now?”
I'm worried about someone else
- Ask directly: “Are you thinking about suicide?”
- Listen without judgment. Do not agree to keep a suicide plan secret.
- If it is safe, stay with them and call or text 988 together.
- If they are armed, agitated, or in immediate danger, move to safety and call 911. Do not try to take a firearm from them.
What happens when I contact 988?
A trained counselor will ask whether you are safe, listen, and help identify the next step. 988 says emergency services are recommended when harm is imminent or in progress and a less-invasive safety plan cannot be made. This is not a guarantee that emergency services will never be involved.
You do not need to explain the job before asking for help.
